The Reading Process
Early in human history, reading was a skill that was reserved for the ultra rich and priests. If you could read, it meant you came from a wealthy family who could afford to pay for a proper education. All books were written by hand, which was a painstaking process and so books were very rare.
Then around 1440, Johannes Gutenberg, a German living in the Holy Roman Empire, invented the printing press and everything changed. Books became more available, as did reading. Because we were able to print numerous copies of books, ideas were spread throughout the world and people became connected through ideas and the skill of read. |
